io-port.net offers various tools to help you organise your own documents, to optimise your search in the io-port.net database, and to upload information into the io-port.net portal.
In order to use them, you will have to download these tools and to install them on your local PC. Downloads are only available to users entitled to use the chargeable value-add services.

SemIPort Document Manager
The Document Manager is a filing system to help you administer your personal documents. You may align and group your documents on a so-called whiteboard and define relationships between them. This works for word files, PDFs, and documents retrieved from the internet. The Document Manager generates a working context from the documents stored on the whiteboards. This working context can then be transferred to the io-port.net retrieval system. Depending on this working context, the „Recommender“ tool sorts hits from a search query in such a way that the most relevant hits appear on top of the results list.
Overview
The SemIPort Document Manager allows for an easy administration of documents that you have found in io-port.net or other sources. Its features include:
- alignment of documents in two-dimensional workspaces, the so-called Whiteboards
- Documents are represented by file cards, to which comments can be added.
- One and the same document can be represented by several different file cards. This allows to comment differently on documents in different contexts.
- Documents can be assigned degrees of relevance (very important, less important, ...), subject areas (Computer Graphics, Information Systems, ...), and content types (applied, survey, ...)
- Full-text searches can be carried out in PDF and text files; and all documents can be searched for subject areas and content types
- Relationships between documents can be defined (Dokument A improves on Dokument B)
- A summary of a selected part of a Whiteboard, defined as a working context can be send to the io-port.net recommendation system. Upon request, search results can then be sorted according to their similarity with the working context, thus facilitating the search in the portal.
- Drag-and-drop support of desktop and web browser
To use the SemIPort Document Manager a Java Runtime Environment (Version 5.0 and higher) is required. Installation assistants for the Manager are available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. For other operating systems, the installation and calling instructions are available as a .zip file.

To define relations between the documents, select the documents of interest. Then an option in the document context menu leads to the „Selected Relations“ dialog.

The io-port.net Editor
The io-port.net Editor is a tool for creating and administering publication lists. With this tool you may record and archive your own publications and upload them into io-port.net
The Editor needs to be installed on your PC; this requires the Java Runtime Environment 1.5.0.

The database browser is an intuitive graphic tool for navigating within the io-port.net literature database.
The browser needs to be installed on your PC.
