Why is the use of io-port.net not entirely free of charge? Why should I have to pay for information which is available for free on the internet?
In the production version, a large part of io.port.net will be accessible free of charge, especially those data which were provided for free by the producers. On the other hand, there is information the production of which is extremely expensive. The producers allocate these costs to the users, and we, in turn, have to charge our users accordingly. Also, usually (considerably high) royalties have to be paid to the rightsholders in order to obtain full-text documents, and libraries also charge fees for the texts they deliver. Finally, FIZ Karlsruhe incurs costs for operating the portal, which are not covered by public funding. Therefore, please understand that we cannot offer all services of io-port.net for free.
Can I encrypt my retrieval dialog with io-port.net to prevent it from being
read by unauthorized persons?
Yes, please use https instead of http. https is supported by all modern browsers.

Registration and user administration
So far, I used to log in via "Login with IP control". What are the benefits of a personal user ID?
Within your institution’s IP address area you may use all chargeable services to which your institution has subscribed for you. Some services, however, are subject to a personal identification. If, for example, you would like to use our e-mail alert service, we will need your e-mail address in order to notify you if there are new results matching your search query. A personal user ID is also required if you would like to create a list of your publications in io-port.net.

I have applied for a user ID by filling in the form "Register for a personal user ID". Can I also use this ID if I am working outside my university’s IP address area?
No, unfortunately this is not possible. User IDs for which you have applied using this form can only be used in connection with an IP authentication.

I have stored various information (search queries, personal publication lists) under my personal user ID. Now I have moved to a different university. Can I still use my current user ID or do I have to apply for a new one?
You may, without any problems, use your personal user ID and access your stored data also from the IP address area of a different university.

We are sorry, but this not possible yet. You may, however, send an e-mail to our help desk (helpdesk@fiz-karlsruhe.de). We will then change your personal data, your e-mail address or your password. The user ID cannot be changed.

At our library, we order full-texts through an OpenURL link resolver, because this is the fastest and cheapest way. Is it possible to integrate an interface to such a link resolver into io-port.net?
Yes, there is an OpenURL interface available in io-port.net. Please send us the address of your link server, together with a short display text for the user, i.e., "link resolver of Mylibrary". We will save both in io-port.net. Once you have logged in under your account, the link to your link resolver will be displayed under “full-text” in the detailed display of the documents.

What kind of software (tools, frameworks, application development systems,. ..) was used to develop io-port.net?
To a large extent, io-port.net is based on Java (J2SE, J2EE, Jakarta Frameworks, ..). The pages are edited with ”ZMS”, a Zope-based content management system.
